Cooler, damp weather is giving central and northwestern B.C. residents a breather -- in more ways than one.

The weather has taken some of the punch out of dozens of massive wildfires, although blazes south of Burns Lake still threaten homes and 36 per cent of the province is still at high or extreme risk of a new fire.

But the weather has also helped clear some of the choking smoke from the region.

Air quality advisories remain in effect for communities near the largest fires, as well as for the area around Revelstoke -- but conditions are easing, with the current air quality rating in Williams Lake set at four -- down from 11 on Friday.
