BC Liberal leadership candidate Christy Clark says British Columbains deserve a new holiday to beat the winter blues in the long stretch from New Year's to Easter.

She's proposing a Family Day on the third Monday of February, which is similar to holidays in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Prince Edward Island.

Clark says the focus of her leadership bid is putting families first, but B.C. families will have to go 111 days this year -- from New Year's to Easter -- without a long weekend to spend time together.

She says a February holiday would not only provide that time, but could boost tourism and other family-related entertainment and increase worker productivity in the days after a break.

Clark says she knows business owners have some concerns about another day off and she'd like to discuss the issue with the business sector.
