With his fiancée freshly out of jail, troubled cancer crusader Steve Fonyo is ready to begin a new, quieter life.

The former Order of Canada recipient and his wife-to-be Lisa Greenwood are packing up their home in Surrey, B.C., and are on their way to Victoria.

Greenwood has just finished serving a 57-day term on theft and assault convictions.

"We're ready for a change," Greenwood told CTV News. "I don't want to go back."

She has been in and out of the court for years -- mostly on charges of theft under $5,000. In fact, she appeared in Surrey provincial court on Tuesday, where she was handed a six-month conditional sentence on charges of theft, uttering threats and breach of an undertaking.

But Greenwood says that an abusive ex-boyfriend coerced her into shoplifting.

"It's something that I don't think I was responsible for because I was forced to do it," she said.

Fonyo has also had numerous run-ins with the law since his historic coast-to-coast run raised millions of dollars for cancer research.

He has racked up drunk-driving convictions and assault charges, and is now a recovering drug addict.

But now the couple is planning a wedding on the beach named in Fonyo's honour, with financial help from a number of businesses.

"We have a new sponsor, and they're not going to back out," he said.

Greenwood is hoping to get her 10 p.m. court-ordered curfew relaxed for her wedding night. After that, the couple wants a life together out of the public eye.

"We just like every other married couple," Greenwood said.

But her fiancé countered, "No, we're not."
