The Vancouver Canucks are going to have to make do without their star goaltender and captain for the near future after he suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs.

The Canucks confirmed Wednesday that Roberto Luongo suffered the injury versus the Toronto Maple Leafs this past Saturday.

Luongo appeared to re-aggravate the injury in Tuesday's loss to the Detroit Red Wings during a second period collission with former Canuck, Todd Bertuzzi.

Luongo remained in goal for the duration of the contest, but was not made available to the media following the game.  He was noticeably absent from Canucks' practice on Wednesday.

Head Coach Alain Vigneault said Luongo could be out of the line-up for at least a week, but could miss more depending how he deals with the pain. He will not travel with the team on their two game California road trip.

Backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft will get the start Thursday in Los Angeles. The Canucks are expected to recall goalie Cory Schneider from the Manitoba Moose before tomorrow's game.

Despite Luongo's injury, the Canucks did receive some good injury news Wednesday.

Sami Salo (knee) and Rick Rypien (groin) practiced today and are expected to be game time decisions on Thursday.

Ryan Johnson who was taken off the ice on a stretcher last night was at practice walking around in street clothes. He will not travel with the team this week.
