Mounties are thanking a group of bystanders who grabbed a shooting suspect in Burnaby Wednesday evening and held him down until officers arrived.

The RCMP said gunshots were reported on Kingsway about a block west of Willingdon Avenue around 6:30 p.m.

By the time Mounties reached the scene, they found a man already in custody.

“The Burnaby RCMP appreciates the actions of the bystanders that led to the apprehension of the suspect,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar said in a statement, “however, we would like to remind the public to call 911 in an emergency such as this.”

The shooting victim, a 26-year-old from Burnaby, was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from hospital.

Panesar said the RCMP’s investigation is still in the early stages, and police haven’t linked the shooting to any previous incidents.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP detachment at 604-294-7922, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS to remain anonymous.
