A B.C. man is in serious condition in hospital after he was mauled by a grizzly bear while picking berries Monday morning.

The victim was attacked near the village of Oweekeno on Rivers Inlet, about 480 kilometres northwest of Vancouver.

The man was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital, where he is in serious condition.

Jim Rough of nearby Black Gold Lodge told CTV News that grizzlies are becoming more common in the area.

"They're thick in Rivers Inlet -- they're all over the place," he said. "Grizzly bears are more prevalent now in Rivers Inlet than they've ever been in the 25 years that I've been here."

The attack comes after reports a woman in Lillooet was possibly killed and eaten by black bears.
