A Kelowna, B.C. man has been sentenced to just over three years in prison for urging teenaged girls to strip for him online in exchange for alcohol and drugs.

Judge Al Betton handed Colin Maddocks a 40 month prison term Wednesday and also imposed a 20 year ban on contacting children online or visiting places where youngsters gather.

Maddocks, 58, admitted to asking a dozen Okanagan teens aged 13 to 17 for sexual favours in exchange for the booze, cigarettes, drugs and, occasionally, clothes or money.

He chauffeured some of them around and occasionally exposed his genitals while driving. He never assaulted them, but streamed video of him fondling himself via webcam. He asked the girls to watch and comment on how they felt.

One day, he arranged to pick up one girl when she skipped class. He drove her to a secluded spot and gave her liquor shooters. He convinced her to remove her pants, took pictures of her genitals, fondled her chest and had her lift her shirt and bra to take more pictures.

Maddocks confessed to police and pleaded guilty to nine counts of Internet luring and 10 counts of exposing his genitals. He told the court he felt "profound regret" for what he did.

"It is very much out of character for me to act in this unseemly, very inappropriate manner," he said. "My behaviour has been reprehensible . . . It has impacted significantly on the community and victims."

The mother of one victim is happy Maddocks is in prison and included on a sex-offender registry for 20 years, but she calls his apology a "crock".

"He says he knew what he did to his victims and the community was wrong. It was three years he was doing this. At what point did he know that was wrong?" said the woman, whose name cannot be released to protect her daughter.

Crown counsel Norm Yates said the case is a wake-up call for parents who tend to ignore what their teenage children are doing.
