Abbotsford police have made one arrest in connection with an alleged kidnapping and extortion attempt last week, and officials say they expect to make two more by Monday morning.
Details are sparse, but Const. Ian MacDonald said the investigation began on Saturday night after police were approached by a 23-year-old man who said he feared for his safety.
On Sunday morning, members of the Abbotsford Police Patrol Division and the Emergency Response Team stormed two houses, on Chase Street and Townline Road, and arrested one 30-year-old man.
"We're hoping to have two more arrests by the end of the day today, but we are looking at several parties being involved in the alleged extortion, forcible confinement and threats," MacDonald said.
MacDonald said the victim who came forward and the suspects are all known to police, and that the public should not be alarmed.
"One of the focal elements in this investigation is its connection to drugs," MacDonald said. "I can say any time that you're dealing with people involved in the sale of drugs, drugs are distributed by gangs."
The suspect who was arrested put up resistance, MacDonald said, and suffered minor injuries. He was treated in hospital on Sunday.
