West Vancouver Police are urging parents to review safety planning with their children after a child reported being accosted Tuesday afternoon.

A 12-year-old girl told police she was followed by a man she had seen near Memorial Park asking a woman for money.

The girl says she was grabbed by the neck and spun around before the suspect demanded money to get to the Sunshine Coast. She managed to run away after a bystander interfered -- but says the suspect then followed her home and banged on her front door.

Police have not located a suspect, but are asking the two eyewitnesses who were reported in the girl's statement to come forward and aid in the investigation.

The suspect is described as a man in his 50's with white hair and green eyes, who was wearing a New York Yankees jacket with blue jeans. He spoke with what the girl believed was an Iranian accent.

Police suggest that parents mind the lower lighting conditions as winter approaches, and to make sure their young children are escorted home by older siblings, adults or friends.
