Strong winds and weather conditions caused significant delays and cancellations at the BC Ferries Sunday on a day that saw wind and rain warnings in effect.

Many routes between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, the southern Gulf Islands to Tsawwassen, Comox to Powell River, and some northern Gulf Island runs were affected throughout the day.

The 4pm, 7pm and 9pm ferries leaving Tsawwassen were cancelled. The last ferry from Swartz Bay left at 4pm and all evening sailings from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay were also cancelled.

Deborah Marshall of BC Ferries said the company aims to give customers as much advance notice as possible, and people with reservations can re-book or refund their trip.

"We do have a heavy weather matrix for all of our routes and all of our ships, and there would be a variety of factors that would go into the decision to cancel sailings," she said.
