White Rock officials are investigating after an elderly woman and her small dog were injured in what she says was a pit bull attack.

The incident occurred on the morning of Aug. 20, as the 77-year-old was out with her small dog. White Rock bylaw officials did not say where in the city the attack occurred.

The victim told officials that a pit bull "suddenly appeared from a nearby property" and started attacking her dog, a city spokesperson said.

The woman intervened, covering her dog from the larger animal as she tried to separate the pair. While covering her dog's neck, she received "serious injuries" to her hand, White Rock communications manager Farnaz Farrokhi told CTV News.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment, while her dog spent the night at a veterinary hospital. Both were released, but the owner said her dog was still bleeding, and needed a follow-up visit.

The larger dog, which the city says is a pit bull, is currently at home with its owner as the city investigates the incident.

The city is "considering taking serious action against the owner of the pit bull as well as the dog itself, which the City’s Bylaw Enforcement Officers have deemed to be aggressive," the statement said.
