Hikers are advised to stay off of some trails in the District of Squamish, where a grizzly bear has been sighted.

The district, WildSafeBC, and the Conservation Officer Service issued a wildlife email alert Tuesday afternoon for the Cheekye Fan area east of the Squamish River and north of the landfill on Squamish Valley Road. The area includes the Ray Peters Trail network.

Trails are not being closed, but officials recommend that the public avoid the area until further notice. Those choosing to use the trails are reminded to keep dogs on leash and make noise -- by talking -- while walking to avoid surprise encounters.

WildSafeBC included an infographic on telling the difference between a black bear and a grizzly bear in its release. The former species is generally smaller and darker-colored than the latter, but the graphic urges hikers not to rely on size and color alone. Instead, look for a combination of characteristics described in the image.

If you encounter any type of bear: stop, stay calm and back away slowly. Talk calmly and never run or turn your back on the bear.

Bear sightings should be reported to the Conservation Officer Service 24-hour hotline at 877-952-7277.
