Mounties say one person has died and several others are in hospital following a multi-vehicle crash on the Lougheed Highway on Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at the intersection of the highway and North Road in Coquitlam, police said.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash, but the number of people sent to hospital is unclear.

RCMP told media that three people were in hospital, but B.C. Ambulance officials said five were hospitalized.

An officer at the scene told CTV News that one of the drivers involved in the crash, a 79-year-old woman from Port Moody, has died.

Few details have been released, but several road closures were in effect at the time: North Road was closed southbound between Austin and Rochester avenues, and northbound between Austin and Delestre avenues. There was no access to Rochester Avenue from Lougheed Highway.
