A man who was killed near a Richmond elementary school earlier this month has been identified as a 25-year-old who was known to police for gang activity in Alberta.

Theoren Gregory Poitras was living in Richmond when he was found unresponsive on a field by R.C. Talmey Elementary School just after midnight on Oct. 2.

His death was initially reported as a fatal shooting, but the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Thursday it is not releasing the cause.

“IHIT can say that evidence retrieved so far supports that this was a targeted homicide,” Sgt. Bari Emam said in a statement.

The motive remains a mystery but investigators have identified people of interest in the case.

IHIT is asking anyone who was in the area between 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 and 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 2 and saw a suspicious person, vehicle or circumstance to call its tip line at 1-877-551-4448.
