RCMP have recovered the body of an Alberta man who died in an avalanche while snowmobiling in eastern B.C.

Cpl. Rod Wiebe of the Revelstoke detachment says the man was with eight friends and family members when the slide hit on Sunday afternoon.

"Two of the sledders got stuck going up a hill and whatever their actions were triggered an avalanche, which caught the deceased in it."

Wiebe said the man was out of his snowmobile when he was buried.

It took the others an hour to dig him out, but by then he'd died.

Unsafe conditions meant police weren't able to recover the man's body until Monday, Wiebe said.

The B.C. Coroner's Service is investigating.

The man's name has not been released.

Another Alberta man died in an avalanche while skiing near Rossland, in southeast B.C., in early January.
