A young man is dead after crashing his car into a pole in Surrey early Sunday morning.

Mounties say the man was driving southbound in the 7200-block of King George Boulevard just after 5 a.m. when the car left the road, slamming into a utility pole.

The man died at the scene. He was the only person in the car, and nobody else was injured in the crash.

Witnesses reported hearing an impact so loud it could be heard more than a block away.

"I just heard a loud bang,” said witness Werner Maute. “And then I saw a bunch of firetrucks, a lot of police cars and ambulances."

Family members told CTV News the young man’s name was Sean, and that he was in his early twenties and worked as a roofer.

Kit Bhan woke up to the news his cousin was behind the wheel.

"I was asleep, my mom walked into my door in tears and just told me that my cousin was dead,” Bhan said.

“When I got here I saw some blood on the seat and that just got me. I had to turn around I couldn't look at it anymore... it was just too hard for me. To see him like this…it’s just so hard.”

King George Boulevard was closed for most of the morning as Mounties gathered evidence.

Debbie Hurshman often works security in the area, but was not around when the crash happened.

"I wish I was here sooner... maybe I could have done something,” said Hurshman, tearing up. “But we can't always be superheroes, right?”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey RCMP.
