A man has been charged with drug-related offences after allegedly swallowing 66 condoms full of cocaine and trying to cross the border into B.C. last week, according to police.

RCMP said 35-year-old Ricardo Vasquez has been charged with importing cocaine and importing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking after being stopped at the Pacific Highway border crossing on Sept. 7.

Officials said Vasquez is a Mexican citizen who was travelling by bus from Seattle.

After noticing Vasquez was making inconsistent statements, officials determined he may have swallowed drugs in an attempt to bring them into Canada.

According to police, he was taken to hospital where he eventually expelled 66 condoms filled with 765 grams of cocaine.

Vasquez appeared in court Friday for a bail hearing.
