PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - A coroner's inquest will get underway today into the fatal RCMP shooting of a Canadian military veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Greg Matters was shot during a stand-off on his rural property near Prince George, B.C., just over a year ago.
The 40-year-old military veteran was in treatment at the time for PTSD, and the fatal shot was the end of an escalating series of events that began with a dispute with his brother.
An independent investigation cleared RCMP officers of any criminal wrongdoing, but the coroner's inquest will look at systemic issues that may prevent any similar deaths in future.
The weeklong inquest is expected to hear from the psychiatrist treating the former peacekeeper and officers involved in the shooting.
Matters's sister, Tracey, has said she hopes the inquest will result in changes to RCMP policy in dealing with people like her brother.
