Health Canada has issued a massive recall on lithium-ion batteries used in Hewlett-Packard and Compaq notebook computers, over concerns that they can overheat, rupture and cause fires.
The recall covers an estimated 12,300 batteries sold between August 2007 and August 2008.
For a full list of recalled items, visit the Health Canada website.
The alert is an expansion on a recall issued in May 2009. Since then, Canadian consumers have reported eight cases of HP batteries overheating and bursting into flames.
No injuries have been reported as a result of the fires.
Health Canada recommends that anyone using one of the recalled batteries should immediately remove it from their notebook and contact HP to request a free replacement through the company's website or by calling 1-888-202-4320.
