One of Vancouver's most popular hiking and skiing destinations says it plans to become the first smoke-free resort in British Columbia.

Grouse Mountain wants to implement a ban by this winter that would kick the smokers to the bottom of the mountain, and that would include staff.

"Our aim is not to persecute smokers and single them out and say we need to be rid of you," said Gouse Mountain spokesman Chris Dagenais.

"What we're aiming to do is help people kick that addiction,'' he said.

The move was welcomed by Nora Kleinewillinghoefer, a former smoker, who works in marketing for Grouse Mountain.

"Being an ex-smoker I think it's a positive change to make in your life,'' she said.

"But I think it's a tough one for employees - especially when they've worked in a place and they've been able to smoke for a while - so it's going to be a big change for them I think."

The resort is already offering smoking cessation programs to help staff kick the habit, and keep their jobs.
