Four people were rushed to hospital and four cars were damaged after a carjacking attempt in downtown Vancouver came to a violent end on Tuesday morning.

The incident began shortly after 10:30 a.m. when witnesses say a pedestrian jumped on to the hood of a black BMW stopped near the intersection of Georgia and Cambie streets.

Kevin Bow told CTV News he watched from the balcony of the nearby Sandman Hotel as the male driver and female passenger left the car, and the pedestrian jumped inside.

The driver then tried to wrestle the suspect out of the car with the help of a Samaritan.

"They tried pulling him out," said Bow. "He hammered it in reverse, the two guys kind of fell out and went flying halfway across the intersection."

"After they hit the ground then they started yelling for help."

Vancouver police Const. Anne Longley said the suspect then backed up quickly into oncoming traffic, hitting three other cars before crashing into the glass window of the CBC building located at the corner of Georgia and Hamilton streets.

The suspect was arrested at the scene before being taken to hospital along with three unidentified injured parties.

"We don't know what their injuries are at this point, but they're being treated," Longley said. "We're fortunate nobody else was injured."

The CBC building recently underwent a multi-million dollar redevelopment, completed in fall 2009.
