Four people and a dog are dead after a mid-air collision between a plane and a powered glider just south of Pemberton.

A powered glider and small Cessna plane collided in mid-air over Nairn Falls provincial campground at around 12:20 p.m. Saturday, according to Whistler RCMP.

Debris showered the campsite, which was full of campers at the time, but astoundingly nobody was hurt, said Sgt. Rob Knapton.

“Luckily no one was struck by the debris, although I understand that some debris fell within 20 feet of some guests,” he said.

Emergency crews recovered the bodies of the four deceased as well as a dog, which was aboard the Cessna and did not survive the crash, according to Knapton.

He confirmed that the occupants of the Cessna had taken off from 100-Mile House, but said the victims’ names are not being released at this time.

Whistler RCMP, the BC Coroners Service and Transportation Safety Board officials continue to investigate, but it is not yet known what caused the collision.

RCMP restricted access to Nairn Falls campground shortly after the incident while investigators combed through the wreckage.
