A 43-year-old teacher at Delta Secondary has been arrested after a young girl was allegedly sexually assaulted near the school gym.

The girl, whose age has not been released, reported being assaulted by an unknown man on Nov. 4.

The Delta Police Department's Sexual Offence Unit investigated the allegation over the weekend, and arrested a teacher from the school on Sunday.

His name will not be released unless charges against him are approved. Police have recommended counts of sexual assault and sexual interference.

The suspect has been released from custody on a promise to appear in court. He has been ordered not to contact the alleged victim or any girl under the age of 16. He has also been told not to step onto Delta Secondary School grounds.

Police have been working with the Delta Board of Education, and will continue to do so as the investigation continues.The school district says the teacher was immediately suspended with pay.
