The cyclist found dead in a Maple Ridge ditch this week was not struck by a vehicle, say local authorities trying to piece together how he died.

A man’s body was discovered beside Lougheed Highway near 280th Street Wednesday afternoon, and officers suspected he was the victim of a hit-and-run.

But Insp. Dan Splinter of Ridge Meadows RCMP said forensic examination has determined that there was no evidence a vehicle was involved in the death.

Splinter told CTV News the man’s bicycle was still in good working condition and there was no debris on the scene or roadway.

The deceased man had no injuries to his body consistent with being hit by a car, he added.

Splinter says the unidentified man may have had a preexisting medical condition that could have contributed to the accident.

His name will be released pending next of kin notification.
