Monsters beware: A B.C. dad has discovered a new monster-fighting weapon to banish his daughter’s fears, and help the whole family sleep at night.
Two-year-old Mya Watson used to lie awake, convinced there were monsters living under her bed in the Vancouver Island community of Sooke. She would beg for cuddles, her parents say, and it was starting to affect the little girl’s sleep.
"She was always saying there were monsters in her room, there was something here, something there," Mya's father, Aaron Watson. “We have been trying to tell her for a while that they’re trying to be her friends and not to worry.”
But nothing worked - until the little girl’s dad made a trip to the pharmacy for a magical, monster-fighting potion. The “monster spray” is made of a mix of water and lavender, stamped with specific directions and warning about the possible side effect of drowsiness or dizziness.
"Spray around bedroom at night before bedtime and repeat if needed,” the label reads.
Now, says Watson, the tables have turned and the monsters are the ones terrified of Mya.
“She’ll come to me and say, ‘Daddy…monster over there!’, and I’ll say oh yeah, you better go get him,” he says. “(She'll get) her bottle of monster spray and (go) 'Choo, choo, choo!' Then she goes, 'Don't worry, Daddy. The monster is gone.'”
In fact, the monster spray has been such a success that it’s spreading to nearby bedrooms.
“We’ve had a couple request for more,” says local pharmacist Dee Vivian, noting they have pre-made several bottles for future customers. “I thought it was cute, and it’s a neat idea. I hope it works.”
Watson says his family has had about 20 or 30 refills so far – a small price to pay for a good night’s sleep.
“[Mya] goes to bed and sleeps through the night,” he says. “So I guess it is working!”
