The Chip-Tastic promises to make crispy, low fat and delicious potato chips with your microwave. But does the plastic gadget really work?

Steele on Your Side put the device to the test in its latest “As Seen on TV” product testing segment.

The Chip-Tastic comes with a slice-o-matic, a mandolin slicer that lets you cut potatoes into uniform, thin slices. To start the testing, consumer reporter Lynda Steele used the gadget to slice a number of potatoes. She was impressed with how they looked.

Then the potato slices were laid out and sprinkled with seasoning. In this case, salt and vinegar and dill pickle were used.

After seasoning, the potato slices were curled in half and placed into the Chip-Tastic tray. They were then put into the microwave and cooked for three minutes. When Steele checked after three minutes, the potatoes were still not cooked. It took a full 10 minutes before the chips felt done to the touch and as they cooled they got crispier.

All of the four colleagues at CTV News who tasted the chips thought they were good. However, one person found them a little dry.

Steele also found the chips were tasty and at three calories, they are healthier for you than a regular store bought potato chip which averages around 13 calories.

The gadget can also be used to make sweet potato chips or apple and pear chips.

Steele gives the Chip-Tastic 4.5 stars out of 5.
