A 14-year-old boy suffered serious injuries Friday after being stabbed at the Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Surrey, B.C..

Surrey RCMP say a 13-year-old suspect has been taken into custody, following the incident that occurred during the lunch hour in a smoking area at the back of the school.

The weapon used was as three-and-a half inch blade.

Police said there is no evidence of past problems between the two boys.

However, Surrey RCMP Sgt. Roger Morrow was quick to praise students, who witnessed the attack for co-operating with authorities.

"It speaks well for the culture of the school,'' he said. Students may have confronted the suspect before police arrived on the scene.

Surrey School Board spokesman Doug Strachan said an investigation into the incident will focus on how the weapon was brought onto the school premises.

The victim is being treated for injuries that were described as serious, but not life-threatening.
