A woman is in critical condition after being rescued from a burning home in the Fraser Heights area of Surrey, B.C. Sunday night.

Battalion Chief Tom Morgan said firefighters arrived at the residence, located in the 10500-block of Arbutus Wynd, at around 10 p.m. and found a man who had escaped the blaze outside.

"He was reporting there was a female inside the building," Morgan said, adding that firefighters found her "fairly quickly" and carried her from harm.

She was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for treatment of severe smoke inhalation and remained listed in critical condition Monday morning.

The male occupant was also taken to hospital. It's unclear what injuries he sustained.

Morgan said the cause of the second-alarm fire is still under investigation, but it appears to have started in the kitchen at the back of the two-storey home.
