An RCMP spokesman says two women, who were killed when a pickup truck plowed into a Maple Ridge, B.C. sushi restaurant, didn't know each other.

Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Friday the 19-year-old woman was eating but he doesn't know if the 46-year-old female was working at the restaurant, eating or picking up some food.

Police have not yet released the women's names.

The Integrated Homicide Team has taken over the investigation of Thursday evening's fatal restaurant crash to determine if it was intentional.

The mid-sized truck plowed into the busy sushi restaurant at around 6 p.m., leaving two woman dead and injuring three others, including a nine-year-old boy.

They are still being treated at the Royal Columbian Hospital.

The incident happened at Westgate Mall, at 203rd street and Lougheed Highway.

Witnesses say the driver accelerated through the strip mall parking lot before plowing into the restaurant.

"(He) didn't seem to hit his brakes, just a straight shot down the lane and hit the curb and flew through the window," says Charlie Nelson.

Witnesses say there was little they could do to help the people inside the busy restaurant.

"One girl was lying on the floor....a lady and myself checked to see if there was a pulse," said Nelson. "There was no pulse, she was bleeding bad and not moving."

While the investigation into the crash continues, Police have the 51-year-old Maple Ridge male driver of the vehicle in custody. No charges have been laid yet.

"We are interviewing him and attempting to learn what was going through his mind as well as gathering additional evidence to support any sort of culpability and what that culpability is,'' said Carr.

"Is it in relation to a criminal charge or is in relation to a Motor Vehicle Act charge or no charge, or is it mechanical failure? We just don't know yet.''
