Veteran Mountie charged with perjury
A 22-year-veteran of the RCMP in British Columbia has been charged with perjury.
A news release from the RCMP's B.C. headquarters says charges of perjury were laid Thursday against Cpl. Michael Nelson and he a court date is set for April 13.
Cpl. Annie Linteau says the charges are linked to testimony given by Nelson during a court case in February of 2009.
She says the matter involved a 2007 investigation into dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
Nelson is currently posted with the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment, east of Vancouver, but he has been suspended with pay since March of last year.
A separate RCMP internal Code of Conduct investigation is also underway and Linteau says Nelson could face penalties ranging from a written reprimand to dismissal from the force.
