The City of Vancouver is plugging in to more green technology with a plan to be the first city in Canada to require residential buildings to provide charging for electric vehicles.

City council will put the idea to a vote this week for expanding its electric-vehicle infrastructure to multi-family buildings.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says electric vehicles are becoming more common around the world and the city needs to be a leader in supporting them.

The city already requires one- and two-family homes to have plug-in vehicle capacity.

B.C. Hydro chairman, Mossadiq Umedaly, says the proposal would make Vancouver a leader in adopting new, clean, transportation technologies.

City council will also consider a recommendation for a pilot program for electric-vehicle charging locations in parking lots and explore the possibilities of expanding to on-street locations.
