Update: The park board has removed the graffiti and returned the sign to its original condition.
Original story: Vancouver’s famous Dude Chilling Park sign has been defaced by a presumably anti-chilling vandal.
The prank sign became an official art installation at Guelph Park in February, though City Hall stopped short of actually changing the park’s name.
Apparently even that was too much for some. The words Dude Chilling Park were crossed out with paint this week and replaced with the park’s real name.
The word “sassssssy!” was also written below.
Vancouver park board commissioner Sarah Blyth said the city will try to clean the graffiti off and restore the sign to its original condition.
The board removed the sign after it was surreptitiously installed by a local artist in 2012, but agreed to return it following public outcry and a petition urging them to reconsider.
It garnered international attention after being lampooned on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this year.
“Between Dude Chilling Park and Rob Ford, I might have to move to Canada,” host Jimmy Kimmel quipped.
The sign was designed to poke fun at another public art piece in Guelph Park, “Reclining Figure” by Michael Dennis, which looks like someone lounging on the grass.
