Police are looking for a man in his mid 30's following a bizarre assault in downtown Vancouver, Thursday afternoon.

A 51-year-old woman suffered a broken shoulder after she was struck by a man on the city's busy Robson Stret. A 29- year-old woman, who was assaulted by the same man, is recovering from facial bruises.

At about 2:00 p.m., witnesses say a man ran up to the first woman and pushed her to the ground. Then he attacked the second woman.

Terry Brady witnessed the assault. He said a man came running down Robson.

As he went by one of the women, he took a swing at her and hit her on the head. "She went down on her haunches and began screaming at him,'' he said.

The man then made off in the direction of Seymour Street.

"We don't know what the motivation was for the assaults,'' said Vancouver Police Const. Jana McGuinness.

The suspect is described as a Middle Eastern man in his mid 30s. He is about 5 ft.10 inches tall and has dark hair, police say.

Paramedics attended to both women. The 51-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment of a serious shoulder injury. Police are looking for surveillance video from the area.
