Two young people were killed and three others suffered life-threatening injuries after an overloaded car crashed in Burnaby, B.C., early Saturday morning.
Burnaby RCMP were called to the Grandview Highway on-ramp on Willingdon Avenue at 12:45 a.m. after a five-seat sedan carrying seven people struck a light standard, flipped in the air and rolled over.
Police said the car's occupants were young adults who lived in the Burnaby/New Westminster area. They had attended an Olympic-related celebration earlier that evening.
Two passengers were found dead at the scene and three passengers were rushed to hospital with critical injuries. The driver and one passenger were unharmed.
Insp. Al Ramey told CTV News the driver was taken into custody and was being investigated for impaired driving.
Speed was also believed to be a factor, Ramey said.
Ferdie Carrion, 18, of New Westminster, was identified by family members Saturday night as one of the two who died in the accident.
Cory Carrion told ctvbc.ca by phone that her younger brother was in his first year at Douglas College and a graduate of St. Thomas More Collegiate, where he played football.
She described her brother as outgoing, a "family guy" with a "big heart."
"He was always there for you," she said as relatives gathered at the family home to hold a prayer.
Carrion said she did not know where her brother and his friends had been Friday night.
Two young women were seen laying flowers at the scene of the accident earlier in the day.
