Police have confirmed that two people died in a five-vehicle accident that shut down Highway 10 between Highway 91 and 120th Street in Delta on Monday afternoon.
The victims have not been identified.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but police told CTV News that preliminary reports suggest that a westbound vehicle lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic at roughly 3:15 p.m.
Police expected the road would likely remain closed for several hours while for the investigation. A tweet from the Delta Police account advised motorists to seek alternate routes.
The Thanksgiving long weekend is always a bad one for traffic accidents, but wet weather has made this year’s especially treacherous.
A total of seven fatal crashes had been reported this weekend before the Delta incident. On average, three people are killed and 500 injured in traffic accidents in Metro Vancouver each year on Thanksgiving weekend, according to ICBC.
