A man in his 30's was pinned in a car for about an hour and a half, Monday afternoon after the vehicle was struck by a 10-tonne truck at the intersection of Marine Drive and Boundary Road in Burnaby, B.C.

The incident occurred just after noon on Monday when the truck went through a red light on Boundary Road. It missed its right turn onto Marine, and plowed into the eastbound traffic.

A semi-trailer was clipped -- and the car was stuck under the front half of the 10-tonne truck.

Firefighters had to cut off the roof of the Toyota vehicle and jack up the truck to give them room to pull the car out.

Only then were they able to free the man and get him to hospital.

Police say he is in serious, but stable condition. They also say it's too early to tell if faulty brakes were a factor in the accident.

"The vehicle involved will be seized and examined for any mechanical defects, but there was no evidence of braking on the part of the truck,'' said Insp. Eric Grummisch of the Vancouver Police Department.

The driver of the 10-tonne truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He has not yet been interviewed by police. Witnesses say the intersection is dangerous and the site of many accidents.

We wish the government would do something about this intersection because it's so prone to accident already. This is the 10th accident already this year," said Fidel Gallevo, manager of the nearby Shell gas Station.

Micky Transportation of Delta, B.C., which owned the truck involved in the accident, says the driver has a good driving record. He was with the company for about a year.

The owner said cell phones are not allowed in their trucks. They use a CB radio system.
