A Prince George dog that lost a hind leg after being shot and not treated is looking for a new life in Vancouver.
Lincoln, an 18-month-old German Shepherd-mix, had a wound in his leg that wasn't life-threatening, but his former owners failed get veterinary treatment for it, said Ann Gough of the SPCA North Cariboo District.
An SPCA officer visited the dog's owners after receiving a complaint, but by then it was too late to save Lincoln's mangled leg, which was amputated in January after the dog was surrendered.
The $1,300 cost of surgery was covered by the donor-supported Biscuit Fund, which pays for such operations on homeless animals.
Gough isn't sure how or by whom Lincoln was shot. However, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, it's unlawful to permit an animal to suffer, thus obligating Lincoln's care providers to seek veterinary treatment.
She said the investigation into the shooting was still ongoing.
"It's unfortunate because this didn't have to happen," said Gough. "He came in pretty fearful, pretty skittish. But he's an amazing dog, friendly, loveable."
Lincoln has spent over two months in a foster home and is now ready to be adopted, she added.
"I'm rooting for him in Vancouver. He's just an awesome dog," said Gough.
