Canada Mortgage and Housing there's more than enough senior's housing in the province to meet the current demand.

The corporation's annual seniors' housing report says the B.C. vacancy rate for independent living suites ranged from 4.2 per cent for one-bedroom units to 11.1 per cent for a bachelor suite.

CMHC market analyst Sarena Teakles says the current stock of senior's housing, which includes meals and other services is enough to meet the demand for that type of housing.

Average rents go from a high of more than $2,600 on Vancouver Island to a low of about $1,800 in the Kootenay region.

Teakles says there has been a slow but steady stream of new independent-living suites coming on the market in the past few years.
