Police are searching for a suspect who broke into a Vancouver home and attacked an elderly woman.

The assault occurred in the area of West 45th Avenue and Cambie Street in Oakridge, shortly before 10 p.m. on Thursday.

Vancouver police said an 86-year-old woman was dropped off at her home, walked to the rear of the building and entered. As she began to turn off the alarm system, a man approached her from behind and tried to force his way inside.

The alarm went off as the woman struggled, and the suspect ran away. Police said the motive of the attack is not yet known.

Investigators were called to the area, but were unable to locate a suspect. The woman was injured and had to be taken to hospital for treatment of a broken hand.

"This is a man who appears to have been lying in wait," Const. Brian Montague said at a news conference.

Police released a series of photos of the suspect on Friday, hoping someone will be able to identify the man captured on security camera.

He has been described as a white man between the ages of 35 and 45. Police said he is between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-11 with brown hair, though he is balding.

Anyone with more information on the suspect is asked to call 911 immediately.
