A man in his 20s has died following an incident at Whistler Blackcomb, just days after the resort opened to skiers and snowboarders.

The 27-year-old snowboarder, who has not been publicly identified, was found unresponsive on Saturday, shortly after noon. He was found near a "gladed area" of Blackcomb Mountain called Arthur's Choice, the resort said in a statement.

Few details have been provided, but officials said a member of the public called 911, who then alerted Blackcomb Ski Patrol.

A bystander performed CPR on the snowboarder until ski patrol reached the location and took over, soon followed by a support team equipped with an AED defibrillator.

Unfortunately, the efforts could not save the man's life, and he was pronounced dead about an hour after ski patrol reached his location.

RCMP have been notified and are investigating.

"Whistler Blackcomb would like to express its sincere condolences to the deceased's friends, colleagues and family," the resort said in an email.

The resort's ski season had just opened on Wednesday.
