Search and rescue crews have retrieved the body of a backcountry skier killed in an avalanche near Revelstoke, B.C. as well as his trapped friends.

The 33-year-old Calgary man died Sunday afternoon after being buried in a slide in the Ghost Peak area south of Revelstoke, despite the efforts of his fellow skiers, who managed to locate him via search beacon and dig him out.

Police say he and his friends -- four Calgary men and one from Fernie -- were all experienced in the backcountry and had skied together for many years. The five survivors were trapped in their camp by bad weather until they were plucked out by Revelstoke Search and Rescue workers on Tuesday.

Mounties arrived on the mountain Sunday but were unable to make a rescue because of deteriorating weather conditions. High winds hampered another recovery effort Monday morning.
