A skier was killed in an avalanche south of Revelstoke Sunday, marking the third slide fatality in the B.C. backcountry in a single week.

The latest avalanche struck at around 4:40 p.m. in the Ghost Peak area, engulfing a man in snow.

Despite the efforts of his fellow skiers, who managed to locate him via search beacon and dig him out, the victim died at the scene.

Mounties arrived on the mountain but were unable to remove the body due to deteriorating weather conditions.

High winds hampered another recovery effort Monday morning, but Revelstoke Search and Rescue and RCMP will make another attempt once it's deemed safe.

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The fatal slide follows two others that claimed the lives of skiers last week. A 44-year-old from Squamish was killed by an avalanche Tuesday while snowmobiling near Whistler, and a 34-year-old Alberta man died Friday in a slide near Sparwood.
