B.C.'s Ministry of Environment issued a flood warning Saturday afternoon for a number of communities along the province's South Coast.

Sub-tropical storm systems are expected to bring heavy rain over the weekend to Squamish, Whistler, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Mission.

Officials predict the rainfall will melt the roughly one metre of snow topping the coastal mountains, which could raise river levels quickly and significantly.

Rivers are expected to rise Sunday, Monday and possibly through to Tuesday.

The River Forecast Centre will provide an update on river conditions by 3 p.m. Sunday.
