Police are planning a traffic crackdown on the Sea-to-Sky highway this long weekend to combat "people driving like they're in a Nascar race."

"We're tired of seeing the senseless crashes that happen as a result," says spokesperson Cst. Dave Babineau.

The RCMP's Intergrated Road Safety Unit and the West Vancouver Police are joining forces to patrol the busy stretch between Lion's Bay and Pemberton on highway 99.

Police say they'll be targeting speeders, tailgaters and impaired drivers - especially in what they call the "high crash" locations on the highway connecting Vancouver to Whistler.

Babineau says most major accidents on the notoriously dangerous highway can be avoided.

"Driving aggressively and driving while impaired are choices - bad choices that affect everyone," says Babineau.

"The highway is safe as long as you drive it the way it was meant to be driven."
