A 17-year-old man was arrested in connection with a pair of swarming-style assaults in New Westminster Friday night.

Police say the man -- who cannot be identified because of his age -- was part of a group of Indo-Canadian youth who repeatedly kicked and punched two people in the Queensborough area.

"Detectives are on top of it," said New Westminster Police Sgt. Ivan Chu, adding that police have leads to more members of the group. "It's just a matter of time before we make some more arrests."

On Friday night, a group of Indo-Canadian teenagers ran into traffic in the 1100-block of Ewen Avenue, trying to provoke drivers to stop by kicking their cars.

According to police, a 53-year-old Queensborough man walked past the group of men and was attacked from behind, knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched.

When resident Thomas Wong left his house to see what was happening in the street, he was attacked viciously as well.

"They saw me looking out the window, and they went around the back and threw things at my house," Wong told CTV News.

"They started punching me, and started kicking me once I was on the floor," recalled Wong.

When police arrived, the youths ran -- but two of them, including the 17-year-old, were arrested a short distance away.

The 17-year-old has been charged with breach of probation, breach of conditional supervision order, assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats.

These latest swarming-style assaults follow two others in Queensborough, where victims say they were assaulted by a group of Indo-Canadian males.

George Gaudet was attacked last Thursday, just after 10 p.m., while he was walking home from a local coffee shop.

"I'm walking down the street, and a bunch of teenage kids over on the other side of the street [say], 'Hey, let's beat up this white trash,'" Gaudet told CTV News.

"There was at least 10 or 12 of them," he said. "Couldn't take 'em all on, right? Big guy like me, I couldn't take 'em all."

After being punched, kicked and stomped on, he ended up crawling home and blacking out. Then he was taken to the hospital.

And on March 29, two friends told police they were "jumped" by a group of Indo-Canadian teenage males shortly after midnight. A 21-year-old Queensborough male victim has required facial surgery.
