Parents in the city of Kamloops are on high-alert after a series of disturbing letters containing graphic sexual descriptions and targeting young children were sent to several elementary schools.

Five schools in the north shore area of the city have received a series of handwritten letters this week describing sex acts with young kids. The first arrived Wednesday afternoon.

Police are releasing few details, but will confirm they talk about young children.

"The letters talk about what kind of fantasies they'd like to act out on a young child," Sgt. Scott Wilson of the Kamloops RCMP said.

Wilson said while the nature of the letters doesn't constitute a threat, the nature of the comments do.

"It's serious."

The school district has reacted by making sure that students in all Kamloops classrooms be reminded about using caution in dealings with strangers.

"You just don't want to cause panic unnecessarily, but on the other side you want people's awareness and keep them alert," said assistant superintendent of elementary education Karl de Bruijn.

Warnings have been sent home with kids. Parents are worried.

"It's pretty horrible that anyone would even think of sending something like that out," one parent told CTV News.

Parents have been asked to be on heightened alert, and reinforce the message at home.

Sgt. Wilson said he doesn't know if this is someone's fantasy or an act they would ever act out. He's asking the person responsible for the letters to come forward.

"We would like to hear from you. There are some issues here that you have to deal with."

Anyone with information is asked to phone Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
