An outbreak of C. difficile at a Vancouver Island hospital has left one patient dead.
Last week, the Vancouver Island Health Authority announced it was dealing with an outbreak of C. difficile at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
CTV News has learned that one of the infected patients has died. No details have been released about the victim's identity.
A total of 13 people have become sick with C. difficile at the hospital.
The health authority says the hospital has increased cleaning procedures and taken other steps to minimize the spread of the illness.
Clostridium difficile is a highly contagious bug that can infect the gastrointestinal tract and cause severe diarrhea in vulnerable patients.
