A 33-year-old man is dead, and two people were injured after their boat collided with a log boom in Chemainus, B.C. on Friday night, according to North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

Sgt. Clayton Twamley told ctvbc.ca that the collision happened at around 10 p.m. Mounties responded to the scene near Bare Point after a nearby tug boat crew heard loud cries for help from the water and called 911.

Twamley said that the driver of the 16-foot boat was found dead at the scene. The other two male passengers in the boat were both taken to hospital with undetermined injuries. One man remained in hospital on Saturday.

"They collided with a large bundle of logs and it appears they were probably thrown from the boat," Twamley said. "Based on impact, they hit it at a fair, but undetermined speed."

Twamley is not saying whether alcohol or speed was a factor in the collision.

Twamley said the tragic incident is a reminder to boaters to be extra cautious during the busy summer season on the water.
