A house under construction in Coquitlam burned to the ground Friday night in what police are treating as a suspicious fire.

Around 10:45 p.m. fire crews arrived to the 1300 block of Glenbrook Street to find the home fully engulfed in flames.

Coquitlam’s assistant fire chief Greg Mayberry said because the house was unfinished and the wood was exposed, the fire was able to tear through the building and leave little behind.

“It collapsed and it is definitely a write-off,” Mayberry said.

Neighbours in the house to the south were able to get out without incident and fire fighters used the upstairs of the house on the other side, also empty and under construction, to get better angles to fight the fire.

Mayberry said neighbours reported seeing some people leaving the area as fire crews arrived.

The house on the north side sustained some fire damage but no one was injured in the blaze.
