Police are blaming ice and fog for a massive multi-car pileup that has halted traffic on the Port Mann Bridge for a number of hours on Boxing Day.

RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen says upwards of 12 vehicles have crashed, resulting in hours of traffic gridlock for east-bound motorists.

"There has been significant property damages to the vehicles," Thiessen said.

One man, believed to be in his 40s, was rushed to hospital with serious abdominal wounds.

"Other than that, injuries are relatively minor," Thiessen said. "Bumps, bruises and cuts mostly."

The bridge, which links Coquitlam and Surrey, was reopened to traffic on Saturday afternoon.
